Victims of Air Flight QZ8501 Memorial: Menerangi

Air Asia Logo

The purpose of this school project is to design a memorial for the victims of Air Asia Flight QZ8501. This project aims to educate people about the tragedy and help them gain a deeper understanding of the victims of the plane crash.

The material used in this project would be originally made in Indonesia. The shape is inspired by airfoil. It is separated into two parts. The steel grey granite with 81 little squares on both sides. This represents the 162 victims. Inside the subtract windows, there are LED yellow lights for mourning the victims. The victims’ names would be engraved on the bottom of both sides of the granite. The other part of the design is a glass fountain. This represents the bad weather when this tragedy occurred as well as the crash site off of Borneo in the Java Sea.

The thickness changes give the impression of time passing and signify that the victims will be remembered long into the future. This memorial will stand to shine a light on this dark tragedy so that lessons can be learned that will help prevent another such accident from occurring. It will also brighten up the lives of the families that lost a loved one. It is this theme that prompted the name of this work, Menerangi, which is Indonesian for illuminate.
